10 Movies That Made the Most Money in 2014

10. Godzilla

Gareth Edward’s reboot of the classic monster movie franchise made just over $200 million during its run in theaters after it came out in May. Starring Bryan Cranston of Breaking Bad and the youngest Olsen sister Elizabeth, the movie was praised for a good mix of human drama and monsters smashing buildings. Given that it’d been 16 years since the last, horrible Godzillareboot starring Matthew Broderick, audiences were curious to see if Edwards could bring anything new to the table and do a good job while he was at it. The movie has a 73% rating on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, indicating a mostly positive reaction from critics. Between the critical reception and the money earned, Edwards is already set to make a sequel.

9. The Amazing Spider-Man 2

The second installment in Sony’s reboot of the Spider-Man franchise made $202 million at the box office, but came in below expectations both monetarily and critically. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was the worst-performing of all the Spider-Man films that Sony has made. The Amazing Spider-Man movies have been criticized from the beginning for coming too soon after Samm Raimi’s original Spider-Man trilogy starring Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst. While the chemistry between real-life couple Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone has always been the redeeming quality of The Amazing Spider-Man, this movie has a dismal 53% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and critics complained that it lacked focus. This was one of the big tentpole pictures released this year that cracked the top 10 list but failed to meet expectations.

8. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

The latest Planet of the Apes movie made $208 million at the box office. Critics said that it is the best Planet of the Apes movie yet, with incredible special effects used to turn actors into humanoid apes that battle against real humans for supremacy on a future planet Earth. Actor Andy Serkis is turned into the ape leader Caesar through motion-capture technology and gives a performance that had critics raving. “Whatever alchemy of high-end animation technology and actorly skill it was that brought this philosopher-ape to life, Caesar made for a gripping and unusually complex antihero,” said Slate. The movie has a 91% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and was among the highest-rated of the summer’s blockbusters.

7. X-Men: Days of Future Past

The latest X-Men movie from director Bryan Singer opened on Memorial Day weekend and made $233 million while it was in theaters. Despite a horrendous title and an often convoluted plot, the movie benefited from great performances by its stellar ensemble cast including Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender, Hugh Jackman, Ian McKellan, and Patrick Stewart. With a 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, many critics said Days of Future Past is the best film so far in the X-Men franchise. This was also one of the rare movies this year to exceed expectations. Over the four-day holiday weekend when it came out, the movie made $110.5 million, which beat studio Fox’s estimates that it would pull in around $100 million. Though Days of Future Past beat the amount Fox had estimated it’d make, it didn’t end up making for the biggest weekend opening of the year as other analysts had predicted.

6. Maleficent

Disney’s feminist re-telling of Sleeping Beauty starring Angelina Jolie as the misunderstood witch Maleficent made $241 million at the box office and was praised for bringing a feminist message to a young audience. Instead of portraying Maleficent as a cruel villain, the movie seeks to show why she decided to curse the young princess as a way to punish the king for assaulting her. While the film as a whole didn’t do Jolie justice with a 49% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, her performance was called one of her best. In terms of money, the film was cited as an example of how female-centered movies with female leads can be big money-makers even though studios still seem reluctant to make them on the grounds that they don’t perform well at the box office.
Transformers: Age of Extinction
source: Paramount Pictures

5. Transformers: Age of Extinction

This summer, bombastic director Michael Bay proved that not only does he not need critics for box office success, but he also doesn’t need his own franchise stars. The fourth installment in the Transformers series featured a completely new cast including Mark Wahlberg and newcomer Nicola Peltz. The real stars of these movies have always been the special effects-created robot transformers and fans came to the theaters in droves to see the transformers destroy things. Age of Extinction was the first movie this year to gross over $100 million and it made $245 million in total. Rotten Tomatoes gave the movie a dismal 16% rating, with critics universally panning it. Age of Extinction was yet another film to show that movies don’t need the approval of critics to do well at the box office and people are all too willing to go see “bad” movies.

4. The LEGO Movie

The LEGO Movie was the highest-grossing animated film of the year, having made $257 million in theaters and earning praise as one of the best family movies of 2014. While a movie about a brand of toys might seem like a dubious concept — after all look what happened with Transformers – Warner Bros. used stop-motion animation and a superb voice cast to bring to life the imagined worlds many people spent their childhoods creating with LEGO blocks. A huge variety of comedians including Chris Pratt, Will Arnett, Will Ferrell, Charlie Day, and many others help bring the blocks to life. The movie has a 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and its success at the box office shows how important family movies are when it comes to bringing people to theaters.

3. Captain America: The Winter Soldier

Marvel dominates the box office every year with its star-studded comic book adaptations that moviegoers seem to find irresistible. The second Captain America movie is one of the studio’s finest achievements to date. While it didn’t make as much money as some of Marvel’s other films, including the one that ranked No. 1 this year, Winter Soldier was a critical high point for the studio and was praised for more prominently featuring Scarlett Johansson’s character. The movie featured dystopian political undertones that seem timely with current concern over privacy in the wake of the NSA scandal, as well as expanded on the relationship between Johansson’s character Natasha/Black Widow and Chris Evans’ Captain America. The movie got an 89% on Rotten Tomatoes and many critics cited it as one of Marvel’s best films yet.

2. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1

The third Hunger Games movie was one that box office analysts had been hoping would help make up for the dismal summer, but they placed such high expectations on it that the movie was almost doomed to disappoint. Sequels typically perform better than their predecessors at the box office, but the first in the two-part split of the Mockingjay had a softer opening than either of the other two Hunger Games movies. The movie had the biggest opening weekend of the year with $124 million, but it didn’t meet expectations that were around $140 million at their most conservative.
It’s possible that the split-the-final-book-into-two-movies format that’s been used with the Harry Potter and Twilight franchises as well has become a bit of a turn-off to audiences, as it results in a first film that spends a lot of time on exposition and not enough time on action. Some people even end up feeling like they can skip out on the first movie and just watch the finale. Even though Mockingjay – Part 1 fell below expectations, it still came out as the second-highest grossing movie of the year and it’s still going strong in theaters over the holidays.

1. Guardians of the Galaxy

Thus far Marvel’s comedy Guardians of the Galaxy is the only movie that’s come out this year to crack the $300 million mark, having made $332 million during its run in theaters this summer. Marvel has long been known for successfully luring audiences into theaters and its films are consistently among the highest-grossing. Guardians is a comedy that can appeal to both children and adults and it proved that Marvel can sell even obscure comic book characters if it puts its money and muscle into the adaptation. The movie did well with critics, too, getting a 90% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Guardians was praised for its humor and visuals as well as a star-making performance from Parks and Recreation’s Chris Pratt, transforming him from funny fat guy into action hero.

10 Best Cars on the Market for 2015

Every automotive publication has its own definition of “best” cars on the market. At Car and Driver Magazine, editors zero in on the vehicles that do what the segment demands better than other available cars while performing with grace and delivering exceptional value. They take a strictly “car” approach as well, so there are no crossovers or other interlopers, and the price cap is $80,000. Only coupes, sedans, and hatchbacks make the grade. The latest list included returning champs and a few intriguing new entries. Here are the 10 best cars of 2015 according to Car and Driver, listed in alphabetical order.

1. BMW M235i

Car and Driver is all about the M235i, the BMW that straddles the line between the M performance line and the automaker’s more sedate offerings in what editors called a “perfect” way. In fact, this 320-horsepower thriller “proves BMW still has the code to driving excellence” in the publication’s estimation. That endorsement is worthy of at least a few billboards in a neighborhood near you, should the automaker choose to quote it.

2. Cadillac CTS

With all three German luxury automakers cranking up the quality meter, Cadillac needed a home run to place its CTS in the top 10 list. Car and Driver says “mission accomplished” for GM’s luxury brand as it nudged aside the Audi A6 and Mercedes E-Class to take its spot among the best of 2015. According to the publication, Cadillac’s work on the CTS handling is what earned it the prize. Endless tests on the Nürburgring proved the aluminium front components, battery placement, and obsessive gram-counting were delivering the knockout formula.

3. Chevy Corvette Stingray

Coming back for its second-straight go on the 10 best list is the Chevy Corvette Stingray, the seventh generation Car and Driver says is the “best-ever” without any reservations.  In fact, the publication rhapsodizes about the 6.2-liter V8 on such levels it is enough to make readers blush. The bottom line is Car and Driver believes (as so many others do) that the platform and engine are so otherworldly in the Stingray that the upgrades to the body and cockpit make it a modern legend.

4. Ford Mustang GT

Car and Driver treats the tale behind the new Mustang’s independent rear suspension as an essential modern creation story, and maybe the editors should: it elevated the sixth-generation icon to previously unrealized heights. Shoving aside Camaro and Challenger to burn onto the top 10 list, the Mustang GT claimed the muscle crown for 2015. Saying the Mustang ” interior boasts meticulousness heretofore absent from mainstream American cars,” Car and Driver considered the entire package (including the power upgrade) a smashing success. Bonus points were given for the introduction of line lock, a first for production vehicles.

5. Honda Accord

Can a rock star car be hiding in the driveways of 400,000 new buyers every year? Car and Driver says the Honda Accord is one such vehicle, a car that is “better than it has to be” for two reasons. The first is the engineering achievement that gives the seamless impression of harmony when driving Honda’s midsize sedan; the second is the car’s ability to handle engaged runs and start-stop affairs to the supermarket with equal aplomb. For anyone with doubts about buying an Accord, Car and Driver offers a strong case in its favor.

6. Mazda3

Anyone who has read a review of the Mazda3 in recent years will not be surprised to find this all star in the top 10 of 2015. Car and Driver loves the interior layout (especially the info display at the top of the dash), but the editors join so many others in raving about the driving experience of the 3. It is a perennial contender on this list, and expect the 3 to return for next year’s as well.

7. Mazda6

In the midsize sedan segment, the Honda Accord actually fell in behind the Mazda6 in Car and Driver rankings, but both made their way onto the top 10 for 2015. As with the smaller 3, the Mazda6 scored big on the driver’s experience and its performance car guts that made the site’s editors gush. In fact, Car and Driver said it was probably the one vehicle you need “unless you have 12 kids.”
PorscheCayman

8. Porsche Boxster/Cayman

Only the Corvette ranked higher than the Cayman and Boxster in the Car and Driver sports car segment, and its editors believe the virtues of these Porsches can be had in even their most basic forms. It comes down to the exquisite nature of the mid-engine layout and the ability of both speedsters to serve as commuter cars while delivering the top-level performance when you need it.

9. Tesla Model S 60kWh

Like most auto publications, Car and Driver considers the Tesla Model S in a class of its own due to its gigantic advantage in range when compared to other electric vehicles. Another huge asset is the placement of the battery pack underneath the car that makes it more like a mid-engine Porsche with respect to weight distribution than lesser luxury models. Limited to the 60 kWh Model S because of the price constraints of its 10 best list, Car and Driver didn’t feel like there was much compromising the lower-priced model.

10. Volkswagen Golf/Golf GTI

Now in its ninth straight year that a Golf has been on the 10 best list, Volkswagen nailed it with the both the base and GTI models for 2015. Calling it “the Swiss Army knife of transport,” Car and Driver raved about the light steering, the smoothness of the torque distribution, and the Golf’s ability to fit into every budget and need a driver might have. To show why it is so enthusiastic, the editors then break down the winning qualities of each trim. Every Golf is a winner on this list.

Top 10 English Premier League Goalkeepers in 2015

Top 10 English Premier League Goalkeepers 2015:
Finding out the top 10 English Premier League Goalkeepers is a tough job. There are so many standards to be considered while selecting them. Here in this short list we are mostly emphasizing on these English Premier League Goalkeepers’ previous and present records as well as their market value or in other words how these English Premier League Goalkeepers are being paid.
Let’s find out, who is the most valuable English Premier League Goalkeeper in 2015?

10. Brad Guzan – Aston Villa F.C.

Brad Guzan ; image credit www.telegraph.co.uk
Brad Guzan is one of the only three American goalkeepers in the English Premier League history. Tim Howard and Brad Friedel are the other two American goalkeepers playing in the most popular football league in the world. He showed that he was capable of taking over as first choice keeper at Aston Villa.
Undoubtedly he can withstand as much pressure as anyone else in Barclays Premier League. He can be easily counted as the most valuable English Premier League Goalkeeper as he is at his peak form right now.
9. Ben Foster – West Bromwich Albion F.C.
Ben Foster ; image credit www.telegraph.co.uk
Ben Foster is back again to West Brom permanently this season. He has played reasonably well for the last season. And obviously some cases were like earning points for the Baggies. He is now at 30 and still a few years to settle properly into being a real class as being one of the most valuable English Premier League Goalkeepers in 2015.
He is also currently one of the West Brom’s most valuable players in 2014-2015 season.

8. Julio Cesar – QPR (currently at S.L. Benfica)

Julio Cesar ; image credit www.dailymail.co.uk
Julio Cesar may have come to the Premier League for just one season especially at the age of 34. But unfortunately his team QPR have been relegated last season. But he was quite able to show the type of goalkeeping that has won him League titles and cups in Italian Serie A.
Even with his team relegated, he was a real team player. He kept 6 clean sheets over the season and playing for QPR this is extremely good as being one of the most valuable English Premier League Goalkeepers in 2015.

7. Jussi Jaaskelainen – West Ham United F.C.

Jussi Jaaskelainen ; image credit foreverwestham.com
The age old Premier League veteran, Jussi Jaaskelainen is another well-known goalkeeper. He is currently the 7th in this list of top 10 English Premier League Goalkeepers in 2015. This campaign has only enhanced his reputation by pulling off some world class saves for West Ham.
And most obviously he had a good season with 11 clean sheets in 2014-2015. He makes 5.11 saves a game on average. Definitely this just shows that he can still make important saves at crucial times even at his old ages of 38.
6. Tim Howard – Everton F.C.

Tim Howard ; image credit ceelhuur.net
Although Tim Howard is one of our pick as top 10 most valuable Premier League goalkeepers in 2014-2015, he has achieved only 9 clean sheets. Yes, of course this is not bad, but still a player like him worth a little more I believe. At least a bit better can be expected from the American National Team goalkeeper in Premier League.
Hopefully he will be ending this season with some more exquisite saves and world class goalkeeping.
5. Jose Reina – Liverpool (currently at F.C. Bayern Munich)

Jose Reina ; image credit www.icons.com
For the last 10 years Reina has been at Liverpool. Undoubtedly he was the number one choice for Liverpool at his time. We can imagine how consistent a goalkeeper needs to be as being a part of 10 consecutive seasons in a single team. This was totally impressive. As a matter of fact he was to move very certainly for more world class performance.
He had 13 clean sheets over the course of the last season. He was considered the 5th choice as most valuable goalkeeper in EPL 2014-2015. This top class goalkeeper still has an average of 4.17 saves per match, which is quite unbelievable.
4. Hugo Lloris – Tottenham Hotspur F.C.

Hugo Lloris ; image credit www.calciopremier.it
Lloris have joined Tottenham in the summer of last year. May be he was not at his best performance but eventually he was found getting thing straight clean. Definitely he has got his turn with 8 clean sheets in only 24 games last season. This probably explains a lot about his price tag and our evaluation as one of the most valuable English Premier League Goalkeepers in 2015.
And of course he was a world class goalkeeper before joining the Barclays Premier League. We all can appreciate his efforts to match up with a very new world class Premier League.
3. Petr Cech – Chelsea F.C.
Top 10 English Premier League Goalkeepers in 2015, Petr Cech

Petr Cech ; image credit commons.wikimedia.org
Probably some of you have suspected this name in number one position. What has been a rollercoaster season for Chelsea and their supporters! Petr Cech has been a very important player throughout the last season undoubtedly. He has made well over 5 saves per game on average and he also has had 14 clean sheets in 2014-2015.
Some crucial saves have kept Chelsea in the running for a Champions League spot. Also his save took the team Chelsea to Europa League final.
2. David De Gea – Manchester United F.C.

David De Gea ; image credit bleacherreport.com
David De Gea really stepped up last season. Oh, another noticeable thing is that he has physically gotten stronger. And his confidence has grown since his shaky first start in English Premier League.
Manchester United have only lost 5 games this season and that comes as no real surprise as De Gea has been pulling off some unbelievable saves for the team. He has so far managed a decent 11 clean sheets while making 4.37 saves per match. I think its good enough for a young fella like him.
1. Joe Hart – Manchester City F.C.

Joe Hart ; image credit zeenews.india.com
Of course this is the one name that wipes out all other possibilities of other names to be found at the first position of Top 10 most valuable English Premier League Goalkeepers in 2015. He is the only other 26 year old on this list and has had his fair share of disastrous moments. But he always seems to battle back with his talent.
Most of the times he is found to be gaining some extra lift from somewhere during big games. He is undoubtedly the number one goalkeeper in England. He has had managed 17 clean sheets last season. Although Man City finished the season second, Joe Hart continues to grow and produce results.
